Fall Family Photos - Rochester, MI Photographer

There’s a saying in the photography community:  “October is to Photographers what April is to Accountants.”

This October has been no exception!  I have had so much FUN capturing so many wonderful families (and one high school senior!) this month.  And I’d like to give a shout out to Mother Nature, because (aside from being a bit chilly) the weather has actually been very cooperative (I have one more shoot this weekend, so fingers crossed that the trend continues!).

And let’s talk about that gorgeous fall color.  That’s why October is such a popular month for family photo sessions, isn’t it?  We go from seeing lots of green in our Instagram feed to the golden tones of autumn.  It really makes for some beautiful family photos.

But can I tell you a secret?  While fall colors are lovely, they are secondary to the people in my photos.  Fall, winter, spring or summer…indoor or outdoor…my  number one goal when I shoot your family portraits is to capture authentic emotion and connection.

When you look back on your pictures in 5, 10, 20 years, I don’t want you to just remember what you all looked like in the Fall of 2018.  I want you to feel what it was like to be in that moment in time.

I want you to remember little toddler hands squishing your cheeks.  I want you to remember exploding with joy upon hearing your baby’s laughter. Swinging your child back and forth until you thought your arms would fall off… but doing it anyway because they loved it.  Eskimo kisses.  Endless cuddles. Silly moments.  Serious moments. Real emotion, love, connection.

Yes, autumn is a gorgeous backdrop for all of this!  Just check out the images below for a dose of fall color.  But what I really hope you see is this family’s love for each other…and that’s prettier than all the yellow & orange leaves on a million trees.

Hey!  If you dropped the ball and did not book an October photo session…just know it’s never too late to capture amazing family portraits…no matter the season.  Contact me today to inquire about your very own session!

Why I Fell in Love with Lifestyle Newborn Photography - Rochester Hills, Michigan, Family Photographer

Newborn sessions are one of my favorite types of sessions.  There is so much joy buzzing through a family’s home when there is a new baby.  Being a mom myself, I know just how amazing the newborn stage can be, but I also know how overwhelming it can feel, and how quickly it flies by.  So, I always consider it a huge honor to be invited into your home to document this special (and a little bit crazy!) stage of your lives.

But there was a time when I used to get a bit anxious about newborn shoots.  When I was first starting out as a photographer, I really wanted to create those perfectly posed newborn portraits.  You know the ones…where a naked baby is fast asleep on a perfectly smooth backdrop, flawless skin, chin resting in hands.  Because all the research I had done told me…that’s what client’s want, and that’s how you photograph a newborn!

In my head, the session was all about nailing those poses…poses which, quite frankly, do not occur naturally in the real world!  I never got great at the posing, and I started to realize that I just wasn’t cut out for this type of photography.

But there was something else that I realized.  At every session, there were unscripted moments unfolding that I loved to capture.  Mom holding and just LOVING ON baby.  Dad’s face LIGHTING UP when baby cracks a smile, yawns, or does something else utterly adorable.  The somewhat clumsy yet careful kiss from a proud big brother or sister.  Real, truthful, unposed moments.  Honestly, these are the types of images that I wish I had more of when I was a new mom.

Eventually, I learned that this type of photography has a name:  Lifestyle Newborn Photography.  It doesn’t look at all like traditional newborn photography.  There are no complicated poses.  No props.  No extensive photoshopping.  Lifestyle newborn photography is real, uncomplicated, and true.  It’s about capturing the raw beauty of your new, precious baby.  It’s about capturing the joy and connection shared between you and this tiny person you have waited 9 months to meet.

And here is what I love most about lifestyle newborn photography.  Every photo session is different and unique to YOU.  It’s not the same pose recreated over and over again.  It’s about who you are as a family, how you interact, how you love.

{I feel the need to point out that I have absolutely nothing against traditional / posed newborn photography.  I have huge respect for photographers who pull it off beautifully.  I am honestly in awe of anyone who can impeccably swaddle a newborn, mold them into interesting positions, keep the baby sound asleep, safely spot and support the baby, sometimes get pooped on, and by the way, also concentrate on lighting, aperture, shutter speed, etc. in order to create amazing, artistic images. It is no small feat.}

Today, I approach newborn sessions very similar to how I approach all my family sessions…which is to focus on connection, joy, and authentic moments in a relaxed and laid-back setting.  This is what inspires me. And these days, when I get an email inquiry for a newborn session, instead of getting a little bit anxious, I get giddy excited for the meaningful images we get to create together.

Tips for A Successful In-Home Photo Session : Rochester, Michigan Family Photographer

There's something special about candid photos captured in your home.  That's why more and more families are choosing in-home photography to document their "everyday."

But let's face it, getting yourself and multiple other humans photo-ready can be a daunting task. "Now I have to make my house look good too?"  I understand this can sound stressful for most moms.

But, believe me when I say, it does not have to be stressful.  Today, I'm going to give you some tips on how to have a fun, low-stress, and successful family photo session in your home.

Don't stress about a clean house.

Yes, you will want to tidy up a couple rooms (especially the ones that get the most/best light).  But your house does not need to be spotless!

There is zero judgement for piles of toys in the corner or laundry baskets overflowing with unfolded clothes. Part of a photographer's job is to crop and compose images in a way that avoids distractions, and I do my best to do just that.

Sometimes, however, I like to include these little distractions in a photo.  In the photo below, I loved the child's artwork that was hung haphazardly above the bed!  We almost took it down, but I decided to leave it because it tells a beautiful story.  Of course, I also cropped it out in some images, so the parents have a choice of which they'd like to print (why not both?).

We can also tidy and move things as we go.  I've been known to clean off a nightstand or two in my day.

Choose comfortable outfits.

In-home family photography is very relaxed and casual.  Any of the following might occur at your session:  jumping on the bed, snuggling on the sofa, playing on the floor.  Choose your outfits accordingly!  I find that casual and comfortable attire works best for an in-home shoot. No need to put on your Sunday best!

Shoes are always optional.  :)

Relax and enjoy the family time.

What I truly love about in-home family photography is the ability to capture authentic, everyday moments.  This isn't a staged shoot in a random field (nothing wrong with that either...I love a beautiful field as much as the next girl!).  This is your home...your life!  Relax and just soak in this time with your people.

During the session, you will often hear me saying "don't look at the camera, look at each other."  I will give you prompts and activities to help you forget the camera is even there.

Also, don't worry if the kids aren't perfectly behaved little angels.  I've never met a kid who obeyed their parents for a full 90 minute photo shoot!  The beauty of an in-home photo shoot is that we can take a break, grab a snack and just play. Often times, some of my favorite images come out of those little breaks.

Get outside if you can!

Just because it's a "in-home" shoot, doesn't mean we can't go outside!  Weather permitting (this is Michigan, after all), I love to get outside, at least for a few shots.  Everyone loves a change of scenery!
