Why I Fell in Love with Lifestyle Newborn Photography - Rochester Hills, Michigan, Family Photographer

Newborn sessions are one of my favorite types of sessions.  There is so much joy buzzing through a family’s home when there is a new baby.  Being a mom myself, I know just how amazing the newborn stage can be, but I also know how overwhelming it can feel, and how quickly it flies by.  So, I always consider it a huge honor to be invited into your home to document this special (and a little bit crazy!) stage of your lives.

But there was a time when I used to get a bit anxious about newborn shoots.  When I was first starting out as a photographer, I really wanted to create those perfectly posed newborn portraits.  You know the ones…where a naked baby is fast asleep on a perfectly smooth backdrop, flawless skin, chin resting in hands.  Because all the research I had done told me…that’s what client’s want, and that’s how you photograph a newborn!

In my head, the session was all about nailing those poses…poses which, quite frankly, do not occur naturally in the real world!  I never got great at the posing, and I started to realize that I just wasn’t cut out for this type of photography.

But there was something else that I realized.  At every session, there were unscripted moments unfolding that I loved to capture.  Mom holding and just LOVING ON baby.  Dad’s face LIGHTING UP when baby cracks a smile, yawns, or does something else utterly adorable.  The somewhat clumsy yet careful kiss from a proud big brother or sister.  Real, truthful, unposed moments.  Honestly, these are the types of images that I wish I had more of when I was a new mom.

Eventually, I learned that this type of photography has a name:  Lifestyle Newborn Photography.  It doesn’t look at all like traditional newborn photography.  There are no complicated poses.  No props.  No extensive photoshopping.  Lifestyle newborn photography is real, uncomplicated, and true.  It’s about capturing the raw beauty of your new, precious baby.  It’s about capturing the joy and connection shared between you and this tiny person you have waited 9 months to meet.

And here is what I love most about lifestyle newborn photography.  Every photo session is different and unique to YOU.  It’s not the same pose recreated over and over again.  It’s about who you are as a family, how you interact, how you love.

{I feel the need to point out that I have absolutely nothing against traditional / posed newborn photography.  I have huge respect for photographers who pull it off beautifully.  I am honestly in awe of anyone who can impeccably swaddle a newborn, mold them into interesting positions, keep the baby sound asleep, safely spot and support the baby, sometimes get pooped on, and by the way, also concentrate on lighting, aperture, shutter speed, etc. in order to create amazing, artistic images. It is no small feat.}

Today, I approach newborn sessions very similar to how I approach all my family sessions…which is to focus on connection, joy, and authentic moments in a relaxed and laid-back setting.  This is what inspires me. And these days, when I get an email inquiry for a newborn session, instead of getting a little bit anxious, I get giddy excited for the meaningful images we get to create together.

Why I Love In-Home Sessions - Metro Detroit Family Photographer

Hello!  Does it finally feel like fall here in Metro Detroit, or what?  Leaves are changing, the air is getting crisp at night, and all I want is a warm cider mill donut (or 2, or 3, okay just give me the entire bag).  October is almost synonymous with family photos here in Michigan, and I totally get it.  It's a beautiful time of year, not to mention the perfect time to update your photos for holiday cards.  Yeay Fall!

But, can we talk a little bit about the months that follow?  You know...the next 6 months when many of us just want to hibernate indoors?  Michigan winters can be brutal, but this doesn't mean that family photos have to be put on the back burner!!  In fact, I absolutely love shooting family photos on-location, in clients' homes.  Besides Michigan's uncooperative weather, there are several of other reasons why I love in-home family photography.

(Pssst....I'll be offering an awesome discount on in-home family sessions this winter!  Make sure you read all the way to the end of this post to see how you can get in on the action.)

Relaxed Setting

Where else are you more relaxed than when you are at home?  I totally notice a difference when I show up for an in-home family session versus when I’m meeting a family at a park or other public location. Everyone just seems more at ease when they are at home, especially small children.  In fact, they are usually excited to show me their room and their favorite toys.  This allows me to connect with them much quicker and really capture their true personality.

More Options

You might think that shooting in-home will limit your options on the number of shots/backgrounds, but that is not the case!  I actually find the opposite to be true.  Sometimes, outdoor/park settings can be limiting because the light is only good in certain areas and at certain times.  There can be random passersby that we need to work around.  Shooting in-home, however, does not have those limitations.  I love to utilize many different locations:  everyone piled on the sofa, kids playing in their bedrooms, snack time in the kitchen, and of course my favorite, cuddles on mom & dad’s bed.  Bonus:  the lighting indoors is usually very flattering and easy to work with. I love me some soft window light!  And, of course, weather permitting, I do love to get outside in the backyard for a few shots.

Everyday Moments

In-home family photography lends itself to capturing organic, everyday moments.  As a mom myself, I completely understand how fast it all goes by, and I have some real fears associated with forgetting all the little things (or being too busy to appreciate them in the first place!).  These “forgettable moments” are the moments that I never want to forget.  In-home family sessions provide so many unscripted moments that make beautiful photographs.  You will be so happy that we captured them.

"But Denise, my home is too dark / not big enough / not perfectly decorated enough..."

Nonsense!!  This is your HOME, your PEOPLE, your STORY.  That’s all the beauty we need.  And if you think your house is too dark…do you have windows and a front door?  Yes?  Then we’ll be fine.  I’ll find the light and make pretty pictures for you... promise!

Now here's the really good part.  I'll be offering $50 off your next in-home session scheduled November 2017 - March 2018.  All you have to do is sign up to receive my newsletter to receive this awesome discount!  (I only send the newsletter out once every couple/few months, so I promise I won't be spamming your inbox.)  Click the button below to subscribe, and I hope to be seeing you this winter!

Welcome, Mitchell!

Who's ready for some baby fever?  Brought to you by Mitchell!  He was 19 days new at the time of our photo session.  He snoozed, we snuggled, he's obviously adorable, and he made my job so easy.  I also couldn't resist taking a million photos of big brother, Max, who is a total ham for the camera and pretty darn adorable himself.  I just loved everything about this shoot!!  Here are some of my favorite images.  Angela and Tim....congrats again on your new bundle of joy, and thank you for letting me capture these images of your beautiful family.

PS-  Angela - high five for your awesome baby burrito swaddling skills.  ;-)
